From the first wave of European immigrants in the 17th Century, to the rise of America's first commercial fishing and shipbuilding trades in the 18th Century, to the leather, textile and shoe entrepreneurs that initiated our industrial revolution in the 19th Century, the Essex National Heritage Area, probably more than any other single American locale, is a true microcosm of our nation. Each generation of settlers, seafarers, and the workers has left a mark on its landscape.
The ENHA comprises the 34 towns and cities of the North Shore and Merrimack Valley that fall within the historic boundaries of Essex County, Massachusetts. Established in 1643, Essex County is unique. Its geography, natural resources, people, professions, and culture have evolved over 400 years to mold a special heritage. The County has played major roles in the settlement of America, development of its maritime industry, formation of its Industrial Revolution, and immigration of peoples from around the world.
